Canon EOS 7D

I’ve been using this camera as my so called “daily driver“ for quite a while now. It feels great in the Hand with the battery grip, it balances big and heavy lenses. It has a drive speed of about 10 fps with an buffer of about 27 RAW frames and its autofocus speed, while only having 19 AF points, is also above average. This a ten year old APS-C camera, so you can’t expect anything incredible from its ISO performance. It’s on the level of an entry level DSLR: unusable at ISO 3.200 - which is very limiting in some situations. Some people might find 18 MP also limiting, but it’s more than enough for the most things I do, and probably also most other photographers. On the video side it lack a bunch of features: It doesn’t have autofocus in any when recording, in live view only contrast detection AF and also no focus peaking. The bit rate also isn’t anything special and the options are very limited. You can choose between 1080/24p and 720/60p, which is unusable. It does have a microphone jack, but no way to monitor you audio. But you do have the option to add a battery grip, so you can put two LP-E6 batteries in it and the battery lasts for very very long, for me about 1400 frames, both with optical viewfinder and live view. All these pictures are saved onto a CF card.

In the end it is a very solid camera, with - nowadays - entry level specs, but built like a flagship, which means that it is incredibly rugged, very reliable and also weather sealed - partly. I really enjoy using this camera, but it’s time to upgrade…
