Sigma 14-24 f/2.8 DG

The review for this lens won’t be as thorough as the other reviews in my blog because my time using this lens with the Canon EOS 7D was very limited. I sadly have only one picture I can release for an example image. The camera this lens was intended for arrived a month too late.

The benefit of using a Full Frame lens on an APS-C body is that the edges perform a lot better in terms of sharpness and vignetting because the outer edges are cropped off. Speaking about those two attributes: the lens is very sharp up until the edges, and vignetting isn’t very noticeable. Also, barrel distortion is present, but nothing that can’t be corrected in post. Chromatic aberration is visible in extreme situations but also not overwhelming. Focus breathing isn’t an issue, and the autofocus also not. It’s very accurate - just like the focus ring. It has a very long throw and is very well dampened. In fact, it is the best focus ring I have ever used, and it’s hard to imagine that there’s a lens that can top this one. The zoom ring is very stiff, something you have to get used to when using it. This has probably something to do with the weather sealing. It’s fully weather sealed. The size can be a challenge for some folks, the lens is very wide in the front, which makes it tricky to store in a backpack and its weight of 1150 g (2.53 lb) is on the heavier side. It pairs very well with a pro body camera like the 1D series. The enormous front element is a joy to look at. While it’s internally zooming, the front element moves when changing focal length.

I love using it, but I can’t recommend it for someone with a cropped sensor body. While the field of view is slightly wider than the standard lenses, there are better options for APS-C users, like the two Canon 10mms or the Sigma 8mm, explicitly designed for those cameras and that are a lot cheaper.

This review is based on my experience with the 7D, an APS-C camera, but I will write a review about this lens combined with a full-frame camera.
